The state of Florida establishes the eligibility requirements for the program. A student in grades 6 through 12 who meet one academic and one economic criteria is eligible to participate.   Students should also be committed to participate in the majority of activities and have a desire to attend a post-secondary institution.

Academic criteria:

♦   first-generation student (parents who does not have a four-year degree)

♦   been retained or suspended

♦   grade point average below a 2.5

♦   low performance on any section of the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT)

Economic criteria: 

♦   student enrolled in free or reduced lunch program

♦   family receives public assistance

♦   low income (based on family size)
